Cell Phone Photography Project

When cell phones became fitted with cameras it opened a new avenue of creativity. It also made photography accessible in a way that may not have been before. People who may have little to no experience with a camera now had one to play with without having the burden of purchasing film.

With social networks and photo sharing sites, the ability to post real time activities and life as it’s happening has been creating some memorable if not historical pieces. While I’d been having my own fun with cell phone photography and posting them on another Tumblr site, some of which you’ll find in my gallery, in 2010 I realized it’d be better if the project included others. Luckily, I’d met some amazing and talented folks both online and in real life who were happy to take their cameras out and play too.

The cell phone photography project is featured on another tumbler site, D U C What I C, which is like a large game of I Spy. Current participants live both in the continental United States and other countries, some neighboring and others overseas. This just being another example of how art builds bridges. Even if we all spoke foreign languages (and some of us do) we could still communicate effectively through photos, which drives home the saying: A picture is worth a thousand words.

If you happen by this page or land on the project site itself and have been having a love affair with your cell phone camera and have some shots you’d like to share, please visit our photo submission page and submit. If you have your own Tumblr site and would like to become a contributor, please contact me personally using my e-mail link on the left hand side of the page. I’m always looking to meet and forge friendships with other creative minds. In the meantime, happy shooting and good lighting.

Muse be with you,
Angela Harelson
